SAN FRANCISCO / SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2026

a day across
san francisco

the plan is to walk across sf, stop for coffee and food, and hopefully make it to lands end for sunset. come for the whole thing or join for a section

MEETING UP · TENTATIVE

8:30 candlestick
9:30 bayshore

exact meetup pins and times are still being confirmed. check with the group before setting out. all times are pacific

the walk

BAY TO OCEAN

the official crosstown trail, with a few small food detours

Official trail Food Coffee Bakery Books Transit Checkpoint

business pins are approximate. bayshore caltrain is a transit marker, not the confirmed meetup spot. use the official directions for crossings and trail navigation

17–19 milesbefore food detours
~2,600 ftof climbing
10–12 hourswith breaks
6:49 pmsunset

a rough shape of the day

these are targets to leave each stop, not confirmed group times. the full trail before sunset is ambitious, so we’ll need to keep an eye on the pace

  1. candlestick

tentative start; exact entrance or sunrise point pin to come

  2. bayshore

    tentative group meetup

  3. mission blue

head out after a quick coffee

  4. glen park

a snack or short bookshop browse if there’s time

  5. forest hill

lunch here only if it fits the pace

  6. irving street

finish up food stops and head into the park

  7. geary + park presidio

    start the final 4.5-mile stretch

  8. lands end

aim to arrive with a little time before sunset

the last coastal section needs about 2–2½ hours. if we’re behind, we can shorten the walk or take transit rather than rush. dinner comes after sunset

coffee, lunch, maybe a bun

coffee at mission blue, one main meal, and pineapple king if there’s time. bring a decent snack in case lunch ends up late or we grab takeaway

coffee

mission blue

144 leland avenue
7 am–3 pm

on the trail. keep this one short, around 15–20 minutes

one lunch option

dumpling zone

408 dewey boulevard
11 am–8:30 pm

a small detour near forest hill. allow 45–60 minutes for a sit-down meal, or grab takeaway

alternative lunch

marnee thai

2225 irving street
11:30 am–8:30 pm takeout; dine-in hours unconfirmed

choose this instead of dumpling zone. roughly 12–15 minutes extra walking, plus time to eat

optional bun stop

pineapple king

1915 irving street
8 am–6:30 pm

roughly 5 minutes extra walking from the trail’s turn at 19th. worth a stop if the queue fits

optional browse

bird & beckett

653 chenery street
noon–6 pm

on the glen park stretch. skip rather than wait for opening

possible dinner

beach chalet

1000 great highway
10 am–9 pm

about 20–25 minutes south of lands end lookout on foot. no table has been checked or booked

breadbelly closes at 2 pm, so it doesn’t fit this afternoon route

regular saturday hours, checked september 30. one-off closures and queues may change the plan

if you’re eating vegetarian, check ingredients with staff. ask about broth, fish sauce, oyster sauce and shrimp paste; the menu label alone may not tell the whole story

warm inland,
cooler at the coast

the september 30 forecast suggested a cool start, upper 70s inland in the afternoon, and low-to-mid 60s by the ocean near sunset

this is a saved forecast, not live weather. check again friday evening and saturday morning · latest NWS forecast

bring along

  • comfortable walking shoes
  • water and a substantial snack
  • sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • a light wind layer for the coast
  • a charged phone and a small light

fill up before leaving and top up in visitacion valley, glen park, the inner sunset and richmond. refill before the coastal stretch

joining late or heading home early

glen park bart, forest hill muni, the n judah and geary buses give us a few options. check live service on the day

download the official map and directions before setting out. follow posted signs around construction, stay on marked coastal trails and plan the way home before it gets dark
